God's Gift: Air Con(ditioning)

I spent August of 1998 in Korea, mostly in Seoul. It was hot, and air con (as it's called there) was a blessed gift when found. It's been hot as blazes for over a week here in Tinseltown, and I finally got off my sweaty ass and bought a window unit at Sears last night. Installation was a bit of a bear, but it's cooling sweetly now.

How did/does anyone survive stifling heat? How did we evolve in Africa and not have something other than sweat glands to avoid dying without access to freon and compressors?
